Genie is great. Record up to 5 shows at once, picture in picture, easy remote control. It's a major upgrade from any of their prior DVR Receivers. Suggest getting whole home experience as well, cost $3. You can watch anything you recorded in any room wherever you left off. I also have the mini receivers, they are super small and take little space.

My neighborhood doesn't have Verizon Fios and that's what I want (I had it before I moved into this house and it wasn't available here). I actually don't mind Direct TV. I call regularly and ask to cancel this or that...and they'll usually knock off $30 for 6 months or whatever. I pay around $100 and I have pretty much their best package w/ HBO and Encore channels.

yeah i dont have fios available either....my internet is so bad I have to get two services for my small house and since time warner wouldnt sell me another one even if i paid full price (have to be commercial) I had to get service from AT&T as well....they are terrible....what a waste

I use Comcast for internet. It's $40/month (I just got it). I used several other wifi devices but they all sucked.....and I mean SUCKED! I told myself years ago I will NEVER use Comcast ever again unless they were the absolutely last option.... I actually like the internet service (it's not cable, just internet) and have had no problems w/ it so far. But I have to pay 2 separate bills: Direct TV and Comcast. That part blows.
That really means nothing.
It is a service contract. If they don't provide adequate service, then it is them that are breaking the contract. If you call up and cancel because thier competitor offers you a similar product for a little less money, then they can enforce "said contract". If you are leaving them due to poor service, then they cannot enforce it because technically they broke the contract.
